News About the Nuts

Hamakua Plantation Macadamia Nuts This news actually came out a couple of months ago, but I wanted to be sure that nobody missed it! Researchers at Penn State did a controlled study and found out that macadamia nuts are good for you! Specifically, they are good for your heart.

Well, I think roses and macadamia nuts for Valentine’s Day would be a good thing. You can always get the chocolate covered ones if you must have chocolate. Now that Hershey has bought Maunaloa Macadamia Nuts those chocolate-covered guys should be better than ever!

According to the Honolulu Star Bulletin, this discovery was one that researchers at the University of Hawaii have known about for years. The “discovery” of the lowering of cholesterol levels comes as no surprise to local scientists.

I will make an editorial comment here. I tend to be picky about my macadamia nuts and I like them as close to fresh off the vine as possible. As far as the plain nuts are concerned (which generally means they are dry roasted and at least lightly salted), I prefer the Hamakua Plantation nuts you see pictured here. They taste fresh and never taste like they just came out of a tin can.
Pali Longs Drugs

Where can you get them? Longs Drugs carries them right next to the other two competing brands. Longs is my drug store of choice for just about everything other than groceries. I’ve spent many hours browsing through the isles at the craziest hours of the day and night! It’s hard to get out of that store without dropping $70+ every time. Those macadamia nuts are about $10 a bag so they certainly won’t help you get out of the store with a small tab!

Yep I love the macadamia nuts. Still pretty old school in the sense that I like ’em plain, lightly salted, maybe with chocolate, but a lot of the newer varieties like garlic or onion are kinda strange to me.

Pua, you might be better off shipping them home to get them there safely. 🙂

Hi Webomatica! I am honored. Thank you for visiting and for leaving a comment! I don’t care for the new twists they’re adding to the nuts either. I’m a purist when it comes to the macs.

Of course Pua has got it right… they are best straight out of the shell! It’s the work to get them out of the shell that makes them cost so much.

Now, if anyone can tell me about the “University Update” comment/link back (i.e., who that is) it would be most appreciated. I’m hoping that it’s something UH is doing but I’m not sure.

I just went to a luau last night and left with a bag of macadamias for each of us to eat on the ride home. Yum! I thought I was being bad, but now I know that I was just taking care of my heart.

I love macadamia nuts and sell the Hamakua Plantations brand on our site. We also offer their mac brittle and mac shortbread cookies. They all come in a can but do not taste like the can. I tried the Mauna Loa brand cookies but they taste chemically to me (no wonder, read the ingredients!), whereas the H.P. brand only uses natural ingredients and the cookies taste really fresh and wholesome.

Hi Carole! If you eat enough of them you’ll be sure you’re being bad, but, it’s hard not to keep eating them! They are wonderful! Thanks for the comment and for telling us somebody was kind enough (and feeling wealthy enough) to share with everyone. 🙂

Let’s see, if I had these little gems to sell I would probably eat more of them than I sold! Thank you, Hawaii Vacation Gifts, for confirming the brand selection. I felt bad saying anything against another brand, but Hamakua Plantations’ nuts are the closest thing I’ve found to fresh off the tree.

Now I won’t feel as guilty about eating the Mauna Loa brand of toffee covered mac nuts. 🙂

Hi Sheila! I think it’s amusing that we are all looking for a way to get out from under the guilt. This cracks me up! It just goes to show that we do know better about things… it’s just that we also know what we like. 🙂
